Lake Yeruham
Lake Yeruham is located an hour and a half from the center of Israel. The lake is filled with water year-round, and is a green oasis in the middle of the desert. People from the whole country are drawn to this green spot and come to enjoy a refreshing break. It is easy to reach, and you have probably passed it many times on your way without even knowing it was there. The lake gets its water from two main sources:
- Flood water from the Revivim River flows to the lake and forms the lake thanks to a dam built specifically for this purpose.
- A regular flow of treated wastewater provided by the Mekorot Water Company and the Municipality of Yeruham ensures the lake remains full, regardless of the amount of flood water that flows into it.
Directions & Info :
Entrance to the lake is free.
Picnics, camping and barbecues are allowed. The park is fully accessible to people with disabilities and to strollers.
The Mitzpe Ramon Sculpture Park
Mitzpe Ramon, located on the road leading to Eilat, offers a beautiful view of the world's largest Makhtesh. The observation point is easily accessible by car, so you can reach it either with your rented or personal vehicle, and marvel at the sheer size of Makhtesh Ramon. People ask how big it is. It is 40 km long, 10 km wide and approx. 350 meters deep. From the observation point there is a good view of Mount Ardon, which stands out thanks to its jagged edge and is located at the north end of the Makhtesh (just look to your left and you'll see it). You can visit the sculpture garden during all hours of the day, but if you manage to get there at sunrise, you will have a once-in-a-lifetime experience... The area has dozens of observation points, some accessible to strollers and to people with disabilities, while others are hidden and require a short drive down a dirt road.
Directions & Info :
There is a well-organized parking lot at the site, leading to a small amphitheater overlooking the Makhtesh.
I recommend that you DON'T park there, but rather continue driving down the dirt road for another 5-7 minutes, and park next to the rows of giant boulders. From there, a short walk (about 1 minute) leads to the Makhtesh where you will discover the observation point that almost only the locals know about (be careful with young children!).
Sapir Park (in the Arava)
After a long drive on your way to Eilat, you have finally reached the Arava, and now you know that you have almost reached your destination! It doesn't matter if you are travelling in your private vehicle or with a rental, but you simply must stop at the Sapir Park Oasis. The Sapir Park site was developed by KKL (JNF). It covers about 40 acres, and its main attraction is the lake, whose waters partially flow naturally from Ein Weiba, the Arava ground water reservoir. Next to the lake you will find shade, benches, large lawns for picnics and a few hidden areas you can explore alone, such as the Thai Pavilion, the Piper Plane or the small area of Baobab trees which were brought especially from Africa. If you have some extra time, go to the hidden valley, where you will find a spring with two small waterfalls flowing into the lake.
Directions & Info :
Swimming in the lake is not permitted Camping and barbecues are permitted. There are toilets available at the park entrance.
Neot Smadar Art Center
This amazing spot is located right on the road to Eilat, and is like nothing you have ever seen. The unusual and colorful structure of the Neot Smadar Art Center will remind you of an enchanted castle from a Disney movie. The site took five years to build, and all the work was done by local residents, without outside help. Inside the building you will find a workshop, a gallery with artwork for sale, and a tower, which functions as a natural air conditioner by cooling water and air. The tour of Neot Smadar includes a free visit to the Art Center, the gallery, wine tasting at the local winery and an interesting short movie about the residents who established this special kibbutz.

The Hidden Lake in Timna
Just before Eilat, there is a hidden lake with turquoise water that only very few people know. The lake was created by chance during excavation activities for the copper mines that operated in the 1950s and 70s. At one stage the excavations reached the ground water, which then flooded the area. Following a global drop in copper prices, the Timna copper mines finally closed in 1983, leaving us with with a special and rare memory of our visit on the way to Eilat.
Directions & Info :
Accessible by all types of vehicles.
Swimming in the lake is not recommended due to the high concentration of minerals in the water. *Please note that this is not the lake located inside Timna Park.
